what goes on
Course structure
Every
day, each student receives coaching on at least two chamber works and takes
part in orchestra and improvisation. Each session lasts around an hour and
twenty minutes, though exact times vary from day to day. The natural
pattern of the course involves a day or so of settling and experimenting
followed by a few days of concentrated and detailed work and finally a few
days focussing on sharing the music with others. Students gain plenty of
performing experience. Starting with a 'house concert' groups then take
their music to venues in the local community such as residential homes for
the elderly or hospitals, and finally family and friends are invited to
share the fruits of everyone's labours at public concerts.
Approach
The
focus is on sharing experience at MusicWorks -
the principles of good chamber music don't stop outside the sessions! The
course size is deliberately limited so everyone gets to know each other and
an inclusive group atmosphere develops. While the majority of groups are
composed of students working with a coach to help and advise them, several
groups are arranged with a staff member playing and coaching from within the
group. This helps to give a special insight into the process of preparing a
work as a professional ensemble might - ideal experience for those
considering a profession in music.
Pastoral care
MusicWorks is a child centred organization,
which means young people are listened to, encouraged, respected and
involved in decision making were possible. There is at least one domestic
helper on each course whose responsibilities include general pastoral care
and organising leisure activities.
Library
A
well stocked chamber music library is available to students for 'ad hoc'
playing sessions in the evening. Music for the courses is sent out well in
advance of the courses to enable students to prepare thoroughly before
their arrival.
Leisure time
To
balance the high level of mental and physical concentration there is also
unstructured free time each afternoon. This is a good time for swimming,
football, painting... Sometimes there are trips to local towns or areas of
natural beauty, but more than anything else, it's good just to enjoy each
other's company.
